Closing out August with the tariff story now fully confirmed rather than developing, plus a clean wrap on back-to-school.

The tariff exemption ending: reactions this week

Following our deeper look Saturday at the end of the de minimis exemption, seller reaction this week has been resigned more than shocked, given how much runway sellers have had to see this coming over the summer. The conversation has shifted from “will this happen” to “how do we actually adjust,” which is a healthier place for planning purposes even if the underlying cost pressure hasn’t gone anywhere.

Back-to-school: officially wrapped for most shops

With school now in session across the vast majority of the country, sellers in this category are firmly in wind-down and fall-transition mode. A genuinely strong month overall, based on what we heard from sellers throughout August, tempered by the pricing and margin questions we raised last week worth revisiting before next year’s season.

Scam pattern update

The fake tariff-workaround supplier scam we flagged Friday appears to be a real, circulating pattern rather than an isolated report, based on a few additional reader notes this week. Worth continued caution for anyone approached with an unusually good sourcing deal right now.

Creativity Standards: a quieter month

Notably less mailbag volume on this topic in August compared to July, suggesting either the appeals process is functioning well enough to reduce frustration, or sellers have simply adjusted their listings and moved on. We’d guess it’s some combination of both.

Heading into September

With back-to-school wrapped and the tariff situation now a settled reality rather than a developing story, September is shaping up as a genuine transition month, fall inventory planning, continued cost-adjustment decisions, and the first real runway toward Q4 prep. We’ll be tracking all of it.

That’s August. See you Sunday for the first week of September.
