On a $40 item with $21 in costs, a 25% Etsy sale cuts the profit per order from about $20.18 to about $11.13. To earn the same total, the sale has to bring in roughly 81% more orders.

Introduction

Black Friday 2026 falls on November 27, which leaves about six weeks from mid-October to decide what your shop will discount and by how much. Most Etsy sellers pick a number first (“20% off everything”) and do the math later, if at all.

This guide works the other way around. It walks through each discount tool in Etsy’s Shop Manager, shows how to calculate what a given discount costs you per order after Etsy’s fees, and lays out a setup order that protects margin through Cyber Monday on November 30.

Here’s how it works.

Why a Flat Shop-Wide Percentage Usually Backfires

A percentage off the price is a much larger percentage off your profit. That gap is the whole problem with a blanket shop-wide sale.

Your costs don’t shrink when the price does. Materials, packaging and the shipping label cost the same whether the buyer pays $40 or $30, so every dollar of discount comes straight out of what you keep.

Etsy’s fees do shrink a little, because they’re charged on what the buyer actually pays. That softens the hit by a few cents per dollar. It doesn’t come close to offsetting it.

Now:

A shop selling a $40 item with $21 in product, packaging and postage costs keeps about $20 per order at full price. Take 25% off and the seller keeps about $11. The sticker says “25% off,” but the seller has given up close to 45% of the profit on that order.

A flat percentage also treats every listing the same. Your best-selling item, which would have sold anyway in November, gets the same cut as the slow mover you’d like to clear. That’s the most expensive way to run a holiday sale.

The Core Concept: Price the Discount in Profit, Not Percent

Before you set any discount, calculate your profit per order at full price and at the discounted price, then work out how many extra orders the discount needs to break even. That one number tells you whether a promotion is worth running.

Here is the US fee structure the calculation uses. Etsy charges a 6.5% transaction fee on the order total, including shipping. US sellers using Etsy Payments pay a payment processing fee of 3% plus $0.25 per order. Each listing also costs $0.20 to list and renews at $0.20 when it sells. The current rates are on Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy; rates differ outside the US.

Fee figures in this article are US rates as of October 2026 and are for planning only. They are not tax, legal or financial advice. Check your own payment account and Etsy’s current policy before you price anything.

Here’s the full calculation for one example listing:

10% abandoned-cart offer$42.00$4.44$21.00$16.56Recovers a sale you’d otherwise lose

The $21 in costs is $14 for materials, $1.50 for packaging and a $5.50 label. Fees include the 6.5% transaction fee, 3% plus $0.25 processing and the $0.20 renewal.

Two things stand out. First, free shipping on a $6 shipping charge costs this shop the same as 15% off. Second, a 10% targeted offer to someone who already left an item in their cart is the cheapest discount in the table, because the alternative is usually no sale at all.

Offsite Ads change the math again. If an order comes through Etsy’s Offsite Ads, Etsy charges an extra 15% of the order total, or 12% for shops that made $10,000 or more in the past 12 months, capped at $100 per order. On the 25% sale above, a 15% Offsite Ads fee would take another $5.40, leaving about $5.73. How to Set Up Sales and Coupons: Step by Step

Etsy groups all of its seller-funded discounts under one menu. According to Etsy’s help article on sales and discounts, you reach it from Shop Manager, then Marketing, then Sales and Discounts. Etsy has renamed parts of this menu over time, so labels in your dashboard may differ slightly.

Here’s the order to set things up in.

Step 1: Calculate Your Floor Price for Every Listing You Might Discount

What: Find the lowest price at which each listing still earns the profit you need.

Why: Without a floor, you can’t tell whether 15% or 30% off is safe for a given item.

How: Export your listings or open a spreadsheet. For each item, add materials, packaging, the average label cost and roughly 10% of the price for fees. Subtract that from the price. Then decide the minimum profit you’ll accept per order, for example $10, and back into the largest discount that keeps you above it.

Example: A $28 printed tote with $11 in costs and about $3 in fees earns $14. If the seller’s floor is $10, the most it can be discounted is about $4, or roughly 14%. A 25% sitewide sale would push it below the floor.

Step 2: Pick the Right Tool for Each Goal

What: Match the discount type to what you’re trying to do.

Why: Etsy offers several discount formats, and they reach different shoppers.

How: Per Etsy’s help center, a sale applies a percentage off or free standard shipping to the listings you choose, and shoppers see the reduced price in search and on the listing. A promo code (coupon code) can be a percentage off, a fixed amount off or free standard shipping, and the buyer has to type it at checkout. Targeted offers are emailed automatically to specific shoppers. Etsy’s help page lists a range of 5% to 75% off the list price for percentage discounts, in whole numbers.

Example: Use a public sale when you want the discounted price visible in Etsy search during Cyber Week. Use a promo code for your email list or Instagram followers, so the discount reaches people who already know you. Use targeted offers to recover shoppers who showed interest but didn’t buy.

Step 3: Turn On Targeted Offers First

What: Set up abandoned cart, favorited item and thank-you offers before you build any public sale.

Why: These reach shoppers who already picked your item, so a smaller discount is usually enough.

How: In Sales and Discounts, create each targeted offer and choose the discount. Etsy’s help article says abandoned-cart offers go to shoppers whose item has been sitting in their cart for more than 2 hours. Buyers get at most one offer email every 2 days, and offers expire 60 days after they’re created. Favorited-item offers follow the same email limits. Thank-you offers go out after an order is completed and expire a year after they’re sent.

Example: A shop with a 10% abandoned-cart offer, at the numbers in the table above, keeps $16.56 per recovered order. That’s money from shoppers who had already walked away. For more on the cart side, see 7 Ways to Reduce Etsy Cart Abandonment Before Q4.

Step 4: Build the Public Sale Around Listings, Not the Whole Shop

What: Choose which listings go into your Black Friday or Cyber Week sale.

Why: A sale on selected listings lets you discount slow movers deeply while keeping best sellers at or near full price.

How: When you create the sale, pick specific listings or sections rather than “all listings.” Group items by floor price: deep discount for clearance, a modest discount for mid-range items, none for top sellers that already sell well in November.

Example: A candle shop puts last year’s fall scents at 30% off, its standard line at 10% off and keeps its personalized gift sets at full price. The gift sets are the items buyers are already searching for in late November.

Step 5: Set Dates That Match the Buying Window

What: Choose start and end dates for each sale.

Why: A sale that runs too long trains buyers to wait. One that starts too late misses early shoppers.

How: Schedule the sale in advance in Sales and Discounts. A common pattern is a short Black Friday to Cyber Monday run (November 27 to November 30 in 2026). Some shops add a separate early-access promo code for their email list a few days before.

Example: A jewelry seller schedules a 15% sale on selected listings from November 27 through November 30, plus a code for newsletter subscribers that opens on November 24. Building that list is covered in How to Build an Etsy Email List Without Breaking the Rules.

Step 6: Check How Discounts Overlap

What: Look at every active and scheduled promotion together before the weekend starts.

Why: Etsy’s help article says that when sales overlap in time, region and listings, only the highest discount is applied. Buyers can redeem one targeted offer at a time, and bundle discounts don’t stack with other sales.

How: List every promotion with its dates, listings and discount in one sheet. Look for listings covered by two promotions and make sure the bigger one is the one you meant to give.

Example: A seller who forgot about a 40% clearance sale on a section finds it would override the planned 15% Black Friday price on six listings. Ending the old sale before November 27 fixes it.

Step 7: Keep Your Regular Prices Clean

What: Don’t raise prices before a sale to make the discount look bigger.

Why: Etsy’s Seller Handbook says the original price behind a discount should have been in effect for a substantial amount of time, and that raising a price just to cut it again isn’t allowed. US federal guidance on former-price comparisons, the FTC Guides Against Deceptive Pricing, sets a similar standard: the former price should be one the item was openly offered at for a reasonably substantial period.

How: Freeze your list prices now, in mid-October. If you need a price increase for 2027, make it after the holiday sale ends, not just before it.

Example: A seller who moved a $32 print to $40 on November 20 and then ran “20% off” would be showing a fake saving. Leaving it at $32 and running 10% off is the clean version. If you’re already planning a fall price change, How to Reprice Etsy Fall Listings Without Losing Buyers covers the timing.

Common Mistakes That Eat Holiday Margin

Most discount losses come from setup choices, not from the size of the discount. These five come up again and again in seller forums every November.

1. Discounting best sellers that would have sold anyway. Items that already sell well in late November don’t need help. A discount there just hands margin to buyers who were going to pay full price.

2. Forgetting free shipping has a cost. On a low-priced item, waiving a $6 shipping charge can cost as much as a 15% discount. If you already price shipping into the item to meet Etsy’s US free shipping guarantee, check the math in How to Price Into Etsy’s $35 Free Shipping Guarantee before adding another free-shipping promotion.

3. Leaving old promotions running. A summer clearance sale still attached to a section can override your Black Friday plan. Review every active promotion before November 27.

4. Ignoring Offsite Ads. If your shop is enrolled, a discounted order that comes through an offsite ad carries both the discount and the 12% or 15% fee. Run the numbers on your deepest discounts with that fee included.

5. Running a deep sale when cash flow is tight. A rush of low-margin orders can strain cash and trigger extra scrutiny of your payment account. How to Avoid an Etsy Payment Reserve Before Q4 Hits explains what Etsy watches.

Pro tip: Keep one listing out of every promotion as a control. If it sells at full price through Cyber Week at its usual pace, you have some evidence that your discounts are adding orders rather than shifting the same orders to a lower price.

Tools and Resources

You don’t need paid software to plan discounts, but these help:

  • Etsy Shop Manager, Sales and Discounts (free): where every sale, promo code and targeted offer is created and scheduled. Etsy’s help article lists each option.
  • Etsy Shop Stats (free): shows which listings sold and when, so you can tell best sellers from slow movers before you choose what to discount.
  • A spreadsheet (free): one row per listing with price, costs, fees, floor price and maximum safe discount. This is where the break-even column lives.
  • Etsy’s Fees & Payments Policy (free): the official fee page for current transaction, processing and Offsite Ads rates.
  • Etsy Plus (paid subscription): includes some extra marketing options; whether it pays off before Q4 is covered in How to Evaluate Etsy Plus Before Q4 Hits.

A Worked Example: One Shop’s Q4 Discount Plan

Here’s a hypothetical shop, built from the kind of numbers sellers share in forums, to show the method end to end.

Before: A ceramics shop sells three main items. Mugs at $40 (costs $21 including postage), planters at $55 (costs $28) and last year’s holiday ornaments at $18 (costs $8). Last November the owner ran 25% off everything from Black Friday to Cyber Monday.

What the owner found: Running the table above for each item showed the mugs dropped from about $20 profit to about $11 at 25% off. Mugs were also the shop’s top seller in November, so many of those orders would have come in at full price anyway.

What the owner changed for 2026:

  • Mugs: no public sale. A 10% abandoned-cart offer and a 10% favorited-item offer only.
  • Planters: 15% off from November 27 to November 30.
  • Ornaments: 30% off from November 27 through December 7 to clear stock.
  • Email list: a 10% promo code that opens November 24, limited to one use per buyer.
  • Offsite Ads: the owner reviewed which items came through offsite ads last year and kept the deepest discount on ornaments only.

Result to measure: Profit per order on mugs stays near $16.56 to $20.18 instead of $11.13. The owner plans to compare total November profit, not total order count, against last year.

That last point matters most. Order count can go up while profit goes down, and a sale that brings in more orders at a loss has cost the shop money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I create a sale or coupon on Etsy?

In Shop Manager, go to Marketing, then Sales and Discounts. From there you can create a sale, a promo code or a targeted offer. Etsy has updated the menu labels over time, so the exact wording may differ slightly in your dashboard.

What is the difference between an Etsy sale and a promo code?

A sale shows the reduced price to every shopper on the listings you choose. A promo code only applies when the buyer enters it at checkout, so you control who gets it by where you share it.

What discount types can I offer on Etsy?

Per Etsy’s help center, promo codes can be a percentage off, a fixed amount off or free standard shipping. Sales can be a percentage off or free standard shipping. Percentage discounts fall between 5% and 75% off the list price, in whole numbers.

Do Etsy fees go down when I run a sale?

Yes, a little. The transaction and processing fees are charged on what the buyer actually pays, so a lower price means slightly lower fees. The drop is small compared with the discount itself.

How much does a 25% Etsy sale cost me?

It depends on your costs. On a $40 item with $21 in costs and $6 shipping, profit per order falls from about $20.18 to about $11.13. You’d need about 81% more orders to make the same total profit.

What are Etsy targeted offers?

Targeted offers are discounts Etsy emails automatically to specific shoppers. They include abandoned-cart offers, favorited-item offers and thank-you offers for past buyers. You set the discount; Etsy handles sending the emails.

When does Etsy send an abandoned cart offer?

According to Etsy’s help article, the offer goes to shoppers whose item has been in their cart for more than 2 hours. Shoppers get at most one offer email every 2 days, and the offer expires 60 days after it’s created.

Can buyers stack multiple Etsy discounts?

Mostly no. When sales overlap on the same listings, Etsy applies only the highest discount. Buyers can use one targeted offer at a time, and bundle discounts don’t combine with other promotions.

Can I raise my prices before a Black Friday sale?

You shouldn’t. Etsy’s Seller Handbook says the original price should have been in effect for a substantial period and that inflating a price just to discount it isn’t allowed. The FTC’s pricing guides set a similar standard in the US.

How long should an Etsy holiday sale run?

Many shops run a short public sale over Black Friday to Cyber Monday, which in 2026 is November 27 to November 30. Clearance items can run longer. Long or constant sales can train buyers to wait for a discount.

Do Offsite Ads fees apply to discounted orders?

Yes, if the order came through an offsite ad. Etsy charges 15% of the order total, or 12% for shops with $10,000 or more in sales over the past year, capped at $100 per order. That fee comes on top of the discount.

Is free shipping cheaper than a percentage discount?

Not always. On a $40 item with a $6 shipping charge, free shipping costs the seller about the same as 15% off. Run both through your spreadsheet before choosing.

Is it too late to plan Etsy discounts for Black Friday 2026?

No. In mid-October there are about six weeks before November 27. Floor prices, targeted offers and a listing-level sale can all be set up in an afternoon once the spreadsheet is done.

Key Takeaways

  • Calculate profit per order at full price and at each discount before choosing a number.
  • A 25% price cut can remove close to half your profit on an item with moderate costs.
  • Turn on abandoned-cart and favorited-item offers first, since they reach shoppers who already chose you.
  • Put specific listings in a public sale and keep best sellers at or near full price.
  • Check every active promotion for overlaps before November 27.
  • Factor in Offsite Ads fees on your deepest discounts.
  • Freeze list prices now so every holiday discount is measured against a price buyers already paid.

The Bottom Line

Start with the spreadsheet: one row per listing, with price, costs, fees and the largest discount that still clears your floor. Then turn on targeted offers, build a listing-level sale for November 27 to November 30, and check every promotion for overlaps.

Judge the result on total profit for November, not order count. If you want a head start on what shoppers search for before the sale, see how Veterans Day searches lead into Black Friday. Start your gift-order prep before order volume climbs, too.
