Since May 2022, Etsy Search has considered the keywords and phrases in your listing descriptions when it ranks listings. Etsy’s advice is short: put relevant keywords in the first few sentences, and don’t just copy your title or paste a list of keywords.

Introduction

Most Etsy sellers spend an evening on titles and tags, then fill the description box with whatever comes to mind. That box matters more than it looks.

The description is where a gift buyer checks the size, the materials and whether the item will arrive in time. It is also one of the places Etsy Search reads when it ranks your listing, according to Etsy’s own announcement.

This guide shows how to rewrite a listing description so it helps search and answers the questions holiday buyers ask before they check out. It is based on Etsy’s 2022 search announcement on descriptions, Etsy’s Seller Handbook guidance and Etsy’s Creativity Standards, checked in October 2026. Here’s exactly how it works.

Why the “Tell Your Story” Description Falls Short in Q4

A lot of description advice says to open with your story: how you started making candles, why you love the craft, what the item means to you.

That writing has a place. It just doesn’t belong in the first lines of a listing in late October.

Here’s the deal: a holiday shopper is usually buying for someone else. They scroll fast, they compare several listings side by side, and they leave if they can’t find the size or the delivery picture quickly. A paragraph about your studio pushes those answers further down the page.

Search has the same problem. Etsy’s guidance is to work relevant keywords into the first few sentences. A story opening uses those sentences on words buyers rarely search for.

There’s a second cost. Every question a description fails to answer becomes a message in your inbox. In December, each of those messages takes time away from production and packing.

Keep the story. Move it lower, below the facts a buyer needs to decide.

The First Few Sentences Do Most of the Work

In May 2022, Etsy posted an announcement in its seller community titled “Updates to Etsy Search: Listing Descriptions.” It said: “Etsy Search now considers keywords and phrases within your listing descriptions when ranking your listings” (Etsy Community announcement).

The same announcement gave two pieces of advice. Aim to put relevant keywords in the first few sentences of the description. Avoid copying your title word for word or simply listing your top keywords. ValueAddedResource covered the change at the time and noted that titles, tags, categories and attributes still matter for matching listings to searches (ValueAddedResource).

Etsy’s Seller Handbook expanded on this in a June 2022 article and podcast episode about optimizing descriptions for search (Etsy Seller Handbook). Its suggestions include writing in a voice that suits your target buyer, explaining the need the item solves, suggesting who it would make a good gift for, and mentioning any gift wrap options you offer.

So the opening of a description has two jobs: tell Etsy Search what the item is in the words buyers use, and tell the buyer what they’re looking at. Those jobs overlap. A plain, specific first sentence such as “A hand-poured soy candle in a 9 oz amber jar, scented with cedar and orange” does both.

Two limits are worth keeping in mind:

  • Etsy has not published how much weight descriptions carry compared with titles, tags and attributes. Treat the description as one signal among several, not a replacement for good titles and tags.
  • Keyword lists are a bad idea for two reasons: Etsy advises against them, and buyers skim past them.

Step-by-Step: Rewriting a Description Before Black Friday

Work through these steps on your top sellers first. A shop with 100 listings doesn’t need 100 rewrites this week. The 10 to 20 listings that bring most of your holiday orders do.

Step 1: Pick the listings worth rewriting

What: choose the listings with the most views or sales over the last few holiday seasons.

Why: a rewrite on a listing nobody sees does very little before December.

How: open Stats in Shop Manager, set the date range to last November and December, and sort listings by visits and orders. Mark the top 10 to 20. Our guide to using Etsy shop stats to plan inventory walks through the Stats screens.

Example: a jewelry shop with 140 listings finds that 18 of them brought most of last year’s December orders. Those 18 get rewritten first.

Step 2: Collect the buyer’s questions

What: list every question buyers asked about each listing last season.

Why: those questions show exactly where the current description is thin.

How: search your Messages for the listing name or the product type, and note each question. Common ones are size, materials, care, personalization limits, whether it comes gift-ready, and whether it will arrive by a date. Our piece on writing an Etsy FAQ that cuts your message load covers the same method for your shop-wide FAQ.

Example: a print seller finds that buyers asked “Is the frame included?” 23 times last December. That answer moves into the second sentence of the description.

Step 3: Write the first two sentences for search and the skimmer

What: write an opening that says what the item is, using the phrases buyers search for.

Why: Etsy’s advice places keywords in the first few sentences, and buyers read the opening even when they skip the rest.

How: start with the product type, then the main material or style, then the size or format. Use one or two phrases from your tags, written as a normal sentence. Don’t repeat the title word for word. Our guide to rewriting Etsy tags for holiday gift searches shows how to find the recipient and occasion phrases worth using.

Example: “A personalized leather keychain with up to 10 hand-stamped letters, made from 4 mm vegetable-tanned leather. It makes a small gift for dads, new drivers and anyone who just got their first set of keys.”

Step 4: Add the facts a gift buyer checks

What: give size, materials, color notes, and what’s in the package.

Why: gift buyers can’t ask the recipient. They need the facts to decide alone.

How: write short lines or a short list:

  • Size, with units, and a comparison to a common object where it helps.
  • Materials, including anything a buyer might be allergic to.
  • Color notes, if screens tend to show the color differently.
  • What’s in the box: the item, the stand, the frame, the gift bag.

Keep these in the description even when the same details sit in attributes. Attributes help search filters, and the description is where a buyer reads them in plain words. Our listing attributes audit covers the filter side.

Example: “Size: 8 x 10 in (20 x 25 cm), unframed. Printed on 230 gsm matte paper. Ships flat in a rigid mailer.”

Step 5: Say who it’s for and how it arrives

What: name the recipients and occasions the item suits, and explain the gift options.

Why: Etsy’s Seller Handbook suggests naming the recipients an item would suit and calling out gift wrap options.

How: add one or two sentences on recipients (“for teachers, coworkers and secret Santa exchanges”) and one on presentation. If you offer gift wrap or gift notes through Etsy’s settings, say so here, and match what the settings say. Our guide to setting up Etsy gift notes and gift wrap explains those options.

Example: “Each order ships in a kraft gift box with no prices inside. Add a gift note at checkout and we’ll handwrite it on a card.”

Step 6: Spell out personalization limits

What: state what can and can’t be personalized, and how.

Why: vague personalization instructions cause most of the back-and-forth on custom orders.

How: list the character limit, available fonts or colors, and what happens if the buyer leaves a field blank. Make sure the description matches your custom options fields. Our guide to setting up Etsy custom options covers the fields themselves, and our variations guide covers choices that change price or stock.

Example: “Up to 12 characters, letters and numbers only. Emoji can’t be stamped. We copy your text exactly as typed, so check spelling before you check out.”

Step 7: Point to timing without repeating your shipping profile

What: give buyers a clear way to judge delivery timing.

Why: in December, delivery timing is the question behind most pre-sale messages.

How: Etsy shows an estimated delivery date from your processing time and shipping settings. In the description, refer buyers to that date and to your last order dates, instead of writing fixed dates that you’ll forget to update. If you do put a cutoff date in the text, put a reminder in your calendar to edit it. Our guides on setting Etsy processing times and shipping deadline language cover both.

Example: “Check the estimated delivery date shown above before ordering. For Christmas delivery in the US, see the order cutoffs in our shop announcement.”

Step 8: Add care, returns and disclosures

What: close with care instructions, a pointer to your return policy, and any required disclosures.

Why: Etsy’s Creativity Standards set disclosure rules that apply to listings.

How: if you use a production partner or AI in making an item, say so in the listing. Etsy’s Creativity Standards say items created with the use of AI should be disclosed in the listing description, and items made with a production partner must be disclosed as such (Etsy Creativity Standards). Our guide to disclosing AI use in Etsy listings covers wording. For returns, point to your shop policy rather than restating it. Our guide to setting an Etsy return and exchange policy covers the policy itself.

Example: “Wipe clean with a dry cloth. Designed by us and printed by our production partner. See our shop policies for returns and exchanges.”

Step 9: Put the story last, and keep it short

What: add two or three sentences about you and how the item is made.

Why: some buyers do care who made the gift, and a short maker note can help them choose you over a similar listing.

How: write it after the facts, in your own voice. Keep it to a short paragraph so the listing doesn’t turn into an essay.

Example: “Every keychain is cut and stamped by hand in our garage workshop in Ohio. We’ve been making them since 2019.”

Common Description Mistakes in the Holiday Rush

Five problems show up again and again in holiday listings.

Copying the title into the first line

Etsy’s announcement advises against copying your title word for word. A first line that repeats the title wastes the space where Etsy suggests keywords should go, and it reads like filler to a buyer. Write the opening as a sentence that says something the title couldn’t.

Stuffing a keyword block at the bottom

Some older listings end with a block like “gift for her, gift for mom, birthday gift, Christmas gift.” Etsy’s guidance is to avoid simply listing keywords. Buyers find these blocks odd, and they add nothing a well-written sentence can’t. Remove them.

Letting old dates sit in the text

A description that still says “Order by December 14 for Christmas delivery” in February, or shows last year’s dates in November, confuses buyers. If you use dates, keep a list of the listings that contain them and update them as a batch.

Contradicting your settings

If your description promises free gift wrap but the gift wrap setting charges for it, or claims a 1-day processing time while the listing shows 3 to 5 days, buyers will quote the version that suits them. Read the description against your shipping profile, processing time and gift settings before Black Friday.

Writing the whole thing as one paragraph

On a phone, a single block of text is hard to scan. Use short paragraphs and short lists, and keep the facts buyers check most near the top.

Tools and Resources

You don’t need to buy anything for this. These help:

  • Etsy Shop Manager, Stats (free): find the listings with the most holiday visits and orders.
  • Etsy Messages (free): search past conversations for repeated questions about each listing.
  • A notes file of buyer questions (free): one document per product type, so similar listings share the same answers. Our guide to evaluating a bulk editing tool covers tools for changing many listings at once.
  • A spreadsheet (free): track which listings you rewrote, when, and which contain dates to update.
  • Keyword tools (free and paid plans): tools such as eRank and Marmalead suggest phrases buyers search for. Our comparison of Alura, eRank and Marmalead covers the trade-offs.
  • Etsy’s official guidance: the May 2022 search announcement and the Creativity Standards are worth bookmarking.

Worked Example: A Candle Listing Before and After

The shop and numbers here are illustrative. They show the method, not a specific shop’s data.

Before: a candle shop’s best seller is a cedar and orange soy candle. The title reads “Cedar Orange Soy Candle, Christmas Candle Gift, Winter Scented Candle.” The description opens: “I started making candles in my kitchen in 2018 after falling in love with scent.” The burn time appears in the fourth paragraph. Size isn’t mentioned at all. At the bottom is a block of 15 keyword phrases.

What came in last December: the seller counted 31 messages about this one listing. Most asked about size, burn time, whether the jar is reusable, and whether it would arrive before Christmas.

What they changed, in about 25 minutes:

  1. Opened with: “A hand-poured soy candle in a 9 oz amber glass jar, scented with cedarwood and sweet orange. It’s a cozy winter gift for hosts, teachers and anyone who likes a woodsy scent.”
  2. Added a short facts list: jar size, approximate burn time from their own testing, wick type, and that the jar is reusable once cleaned.
  3. Added one line on gift packaging, matching the gift wrap setting.
  4. Pointed buyers to the estimated delivery date and the shop announcement for Christmas cutoffs.
  5. Added care and safety notes.
  6. Moved the maker story to a short closing paragraph.
  7. Deleted the keyword block.

The result to watch: the seller notes the message count for this listing this December and compares it with last year’s 31. They also compare listing visits and orders against the same weeks last year in Stats, keeping in mind that photos, price and seasonality move those numbers too.

Why it’s a sensible bet: if even half of those 31 questions are answered on the page, that’s about 15 fewer conversations in the busiest weeks, and more buyers who don’t need to ask before they order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Etsy use the listing description in search?

Yes. Etsy announced in May 2022 that Etsy Search considers keywords and phrases within listing descriptions when ranking listings. Titles, tags, categories and attributes still matter for matching listings to searches.

Where should keywords go in an Etsy description?

Etsy advises working relevant keywords into the first few sentences of the description. Write them as a natural sentence that describes the item rather than a list.

Should I copy my Etsy title into the description?

No. Etsy’s announcement says to avoid copying your title verbatim. Use the opening to describe the item in a fresh sentence that still uses the phrases buyers search for.

Is a keyword list at the end of a description a good idea?

No. Etsy advises against simply listing your top keywords in the description. Keyword blocks also read oddly to buyers, so it’s better to remove them and use the phrases inside normal sentences.

How long should an Etsy listing description be?

Etsy hasn’t set an ideal length. A good rule is to answer every question buyers ask repeatedly, put the most important facts in the first few lines, and stop once the buyer has what they need to decide.

What should a holiday listing description include?

Cover what the item is, its size, materials and what’s in the package, who it suits as a gift, gift wrap or note options, personalization limits, how to check delivery timing, care instructions and any required disclosures.

Do I need to disclose AI or a production partner in my description?

Etsy’s Creativity Standards say items created with the use of AI should be disclosed in the listing description, and items made with a production partner must be disclosed. Check the current Creativity Standards before you publish.

Should I put Christmas shipping cutoff dates in each description?

You can, but fixed dates go stale and need updating. A simpler approach is to point buyers to Etsy’s estimated delivery date and to cutoffs in your shop announcement, which you can update in one place.

How many listings should I rewrite before Black Friday?

Start with the 10 to 20 listings that brought most of your orders last holiday season. Rewrite the rest in January, when order volume drops.

Will rewriting my description hurt my listing’s ranking?

Etsy hasn’t said that editing a description harms ranking. Changing a description is a normal listing edit. Keep the main keywords that describe the item, and compare your listing’s visits in Stats over the following weeks.

Can I use AI to write my Etsy descriptions?

You can use a writing tool to draft text, but check every fact against the item. A description that gets the size or materials wrong leads to returns and complaints, whoever wrote it.

How long does it take to rewrite one description?

With the buyer questions already collected, a rewrite usually takes 15 to 30 minutes per listing. Batching similar listings makes later ones faster.

Key Takeaways

  • Etsy Search has considered description keywords when ranking listings since May 2022.
  • Put relevant keywords in the first few sentences, written as a natural description.
  • Don’t copy your title word for word, and delete keyword blocks.
  • Answer the questions buyers asked last season about size, materials, gifting and timing.
  • Match the description to your gift, shipping and personalization settings.
  • Disclose AI use and production partners as Etsy’s Creativity Standards require.
  • Rewrite your 10 to 20 best holiday sellers first, and the rest in January.

The Bottom Line

Pick your five best holiday sellers tonight and read each description as a gift buyer on a phone. If the size, the materials and the gift options aren’t visible in the first few lines, rewrite the opening using the questions buyers sent you last December.

Then work through the rest of your top listings before Black Friday. Get Started on the rest of your holiday listing prep by checking how your listings line up with Etsy’s Gift Mode next.
